There Is No Unessential Role

There is a time when the exotic becomes natural: Fireworks going off at 5 am have become expected, buses with flames painted down the side no longer draw our attention, and seeing two people with a dog on one motorcycle no longer seems strange. Guatemala now feels like a second home and our trip partially feels like a family reunion. Thank you to each one of you who has made this trip a possibilty.

Two years ago, we were digging holes so deep we were unsure we would be able to climb out. Today, there stands a working kitchen where kids get a free meal daily. We used the ground to mix cement in order to lay another row of block on the waist high wall. This morning we were able to walk into those classrooms and be greeted by the children with a chorus of "Good morning, how are you?" It is amazing to see the work that has been done in the time we have been away and to see the school at capacity. Each day as we are working we have watched parents pick up their children who two years ago had no hope to break the vicious cycle of poverty, but now because of this school are given an opportunity previously unavailable. More importantly, today, as the walls of the church building continued to rise, this community has access to the hope of the good news of Jesus like they've never had before. The great commission commands us to make disciples of all nations, and today we were able to take a step towards fulfilling this command by continuing to build the walls of the church which will bless so many in the community.

In 2013, I was frustrated when assigned a job I didn't particularly like. It wasn't glamorous, but necessary. It was difficult to watch as others worked and I felt unimportant and stuck in the monotony of a single assignment. But today, as I used a shovel to mix mortar on the ground, I realized how wrong I was. There is no unessential job. As I watched the team work diligently on building this church, I noticed without someone sifting sand, I would not have been able to create mortar. Without the mortar, others would have been unable to build the wall. We each have our own jobs that make us successful as a team. This reminded me of how we are to work as a church body. We each have a role and there is none that are labeled unimportant. Those who greet are as important as those who preach. Those who make the coffee are as important as those who play music. There are no nonessentials, we all work together as a body. We've worked arm in arm with those down here not as Americans and Guatemalans, but we've worked together as brothers of the same family towards the fulfilling of the same command. Make disciples of all nations. Tomorrow, we head towards Zapote where we will be able to bless a family by tearing down their home and giving them a new one. Thank you for all the love you have shown in your comments. We each look forward to hearing from you each evening.
