The day began with egg sandwiches and it wasn’t long afterwards that
we were on our way to Mebrillal. Yesterday was spent digging trenches
for the foundation of the school and we had assumed that today we would
begin pouring the concrete and we would see the building start to take
shape. We quickly found out that instead, we needed to dig deeper…much
deeper…three times as deep!
At first this thought was dis-heartening. It felt like all the work
we’d done the day before was almost for nothing. But what God showed us
is that in order for this building to last for multiple generations,
the foundation needed to be strong, and the holes needed to be deep in
order to build the foundation upon a rock.
Matthew 7:24-25 says, “Everyone then who hears these words of mine
and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on a rock.
And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on
that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the
rock.”
Our lives need to be built upon that same rock. When digging the
holes for the foundation of the school, the dirt on the lot was
extremely soft. And we needed to dig down deep to find the solid
ground, in some cases over 6 feet!
In Guatemala we have seen how difficult life can be and what God has
shown us is how important His gospel is for us to survive and to have
hope. If we hadn’t dug down deep, past all the layers of soft dirt to
find the hard ground, our houses would tumble over at the slightest
breeze or rain. This is why it is important that our lives be built
upon the rock and not shifting sand.
Again we’ve come to Guatemala to serve and be a blessing and instead
we are the ones being served and blessed! To God be the glory!
