The Return to Zapote

Today was a very impactful day. We started early and got right to work and when it got to lunch time, we had already completed one stove, gotten a second stove two-thirds done, and nearly completed the house we started yesterday. It was hard work and we were moving really fast. The result was a bunch of tired guys rolling up to the Churches’ school in Zapote. What we got when we arrived clearly revived us. Sean and I got there first with Rudy, our local brother who has been driving us around and working with us every day. We’d been working on the second stove, so we had 15 minutes to take in what we saw at the school before the rest of the team arrived with the food. And what we saw was over a hundred kids, in matching uniforms, having post-lunch recess. We brought in a soccer ball and gave it to them, and in less than 30 seconds they had goals in place and teams picked. Nearly every kid high-fived us and showed off their English in a matter of minutes.

Then we had lunch and a tour of the school. We made plans to meet back at the house when the house team finished it, in order to give the keys to the family and share a time of prayer with them. As Sean and I rode back to the house we were doing the stove in with Rudy and the Zapote pastor, Jose Luis, I listened to them praise the team and our hard work in Spanish, thinking that they were talking too fast for me. Luis said that it was great how fast we were working so that he could be able to spend more time with the families we are doing the work for. After everything, we headed back to our place here in San Lucas, where we found that the guy working where we are staying was the owner of the house Sean and I put a stove in. Every week, he’s in San Lucas from Sunday noon until Saturday morning. He was so grateful that we were helping his family that he had all our wet clothes out to dry and had even washed some of our socks. It was great to know who we’re helping and all the work he does in order to provide for his family.
