The
worship service was very impactful today. As someone who speaks no
Spanish, to me it's usually just that thing that always follows the
important English part of an announcement. However it was a powerful
experience to have a worship service in all Spanish and not necessarily
know what each word meant but be able to feel the passion and love that
the Iglesia Galilea members showed and projected as they sang. There
were also some songs that we knew that they were singing so there was a
chorus of Spanish and English being sung in unison to praise God. They
were nice enough to have a lady translate the sermon for us so that we
could follow along. They were very accommodating and welcoming and truly
treated us like brothers and sisters in Christ.
Later in the day; Kelly, Matt & I went out for a jog up along a tree line outside central San Lucas. We took with us pocketfuls of candy in case we made any new friends along the way. Passing by several shanties, shacks and compounds we were able to meet lots of kids along the way who were eager to talk to us. Eventually we got to a dirt side road that climbed up to a small sugar cane field that allowed you to see for miles. On the way up there were a couple of houses with kids outside who were just as eager to meet us. We continued to head up, then me and Kelly turned around and noticed a flock of kids swarming out of nowhere surrounding Matt. So we went back and Kelly began speaking Spanish to the kids, they eagerly gathered around and listened. We gave them some of our candy as we got to know them. They laughed at us and helped us know how to say different words. They were eager to talk to us and more eager to take pictures with us. Then we raced with them down the hill, talked to them some more and said goodbye. It was a fun experience and definitely the highlight of the day. On the way back we saw a couple more kids and gave them the rest of our candy and stickers and told them that Jesus loved them. It was really encouraging to see the impact we could make even in the children with something as small as giving out candy and talking to them, and hopefully we will have more experiences throughout the week to make more connections with kids and adults alike.
